Silly People’s Improv Theater (SPIT) Manila at Quantum Cafe

Posted: June 18, 2012 in Event, Food, JC

For the 2nd installment of my birthday celebration, I purchased a 3-course Dinner -Show at Quantum Cafe voucher from a group buying site again. So last June 7, me and my bf went to Quantum Cafe to watch the Silly People’s Improv Theater (SPIT) show.

Upon arriving at the venue, we were greeted warmly by the staffs and they directed us to our seats. The ambiance of the cafe was really nice, warm and cozy.

They gave us the 3 course meal dinner selection menu for us to choose what main dish we want for our dinner.

Boneless Chicken Terriyaki with Sauteed Beansprouts and Rice

Dory Fillet Baked to Real Food Goodness with Homemade Dill Sauce with Rice.

Silly People’s Improv Theater is Manila’s premiere improv comedy group. Founded by actor Gabe Mercado in June 2002, SPIT differs from the usual stand-up comedy routines. SPIT performs scenes, songs and games completely based on audience suggestions.

Before the show starts, they handed us the SPIT KIT to be used during the show. They asked us to write in a piece of paper a short line from any song. This piece of paper, with short lines from a song, will be used in their performance.

Here are some of the segments and photos from their performance that night.

An audience was asked to participate in this scene. They will act a situation but will be caught in a dead end. The audience will open random page of the book, read a line from the book that will be the solution to their problem and then they will continue acting.

In this segment, the audience will ask a question and the oracle will answer the question. Here’s a video I found in youtube.

They ask the audience for suggestions on how they met and why they broke up. They have to guess it where one have to act and give clues for the other to be able to guess it. If they guess it wrong, people will say boo but if they are close people will say havey.

The audience were asked to give the longest word they know and the actors/actresses will have to begin the words of their dialogue from the letters of the longest word accordingly.

There’s also a part wherein they will give advices about a topic and they will relate it to the powerpoint presentation that an audience have submitted.

Next scene is they will have to act and everytime they here the buzzer, they will get a piece of paper from their pocket and use it as their dialogue. The pieces of paper used here were the ones where we wrote the line of a song.

Overall their performance is great. I was really happy that night and I can say this is a good stress reliever.

In celebration of their tenth anniversary, they will be having MANILA IMPROV FEST 2012:

I already heard or read about this SPIT. I think the show was like an impromtu type where in they will do some scene based on the words submitted to them. Also, they try to compose songs out of the words given to them. I want to watch it too.
